Personality Disorder Knowledge and Understanding Framework

Personality Disorder     |     Further information on Personality Disorders

The Personality Disorder Knowledge and Understanding Framework is a skills based initiative being rolled out in partnership between the Department of Health and the Nottingham Personality Disorder Institute (PDi). The PDi were funded by Department of Health and Ministry of Justice to develop a comprehensive package of training materials addressing Basic Awareness Level training needs for clinical and non-clinical staff who may come into contact with people with personality disorder.  It is aimed at a wide range of staff in all sectors and agencies that may have contact with someone with a personality disorder.

Developing long term sustainability of the awareness training by embedding it into existing staff training systems, training trainers with expertise locally who can support staff in developing their skills and transferring them into their work area is the focus regionally during 2010/11.  There is a drive to develop local networks across all agencies, encourage partnership working and to provide an inclusive service to people with personality disorder.

Partners

The Meriden Programme have responsibility during 2010/11 to coordinate the delivery of the KUF basic awareness programme to 200 frontline practitioners.  They will be delivering this in partnership with key providers within the region, to include the specialist personality disorder services in Coventry, Birmingham and North Staffordshire.  Key partners will be identified to become trainers for the programme across the region.  We will be working with the service user group Emergence to identify and train service users as trainers.  Having trainers within each locality, on a multi agency level will be important for the long term sustainability of the project.

Who is eligible?

The KUF programme will be available to all prisons, probation services, Drug Action Teams and substance misuse treatment providers, Youth Offending Teams (YOTS), police services, learning disability services, mental health services, including statutory and third sector agencies.  Work is being undertaken with Health commissioners to promote KUF training with all their service providers as part of induction and ongoing training for all staff, and with universities and nurse training centres to include KUF training as part of degree and diploma level courses in appropriate subjects.

Networks

There have been the development of networks and learning events during 2009/10 for the sharing of good practice, and this work will be continued during 2010/11. Reinforcing these links and encouraging partnership working within and across localities will be the prime focus
